This is the largest of the Kutsuna Islands, and in the mandarin season, the mountains and speckled with orange.

About Nakajima Island​

About an hour by ferry from Time, this is the heart of the Kutsuna Islands. In the summer the beach is overrun with swimmers, and in late August, more than a thousand athletes and supporters visit Nakajima for the triathlon held on Himegahama beach. Many citruses are grown on the island, and it’s the largest producer of fruit among Japan’s outlying islands. However, due to depopulation, the population has decreased to one fifth from 15,000 to 3,000 and abandoned farmland is on the increase. In response, Nakajima organizations are holding various events with the support of the local government.

Amayanohama

​

20 minutes by bus from Konoura port on the west side of Nakajima. Get off at Amaya and walk for about 5 minutes. It’s close to the prefectural road and the private beach like a hideaway is popular. Dinner is fish taken live from the fish farm.
