Kashima Island is a national park about three minutes by boat from Hojo, Matsuyama. People go there for fishing, walking, and swimming in the sea.
Kashima Island is about 400 metres from Hojo port. There are trails around the island and over the mountain, and the appearance of the island changes with the seasons. From the observation platform on the mountain top you can look out over the islands of Setouchi and the Hojo district. Writers and artists of old including Kyoshi Takahama and Hekigoto Kawahigashi visited and wrote poems. You can also see wild deer in the rich woodland. Kashima was one of the bases of the Kono clan that was active in Setouchi in the Middle Ages, and you can still see the ruins of a castle on the mountain, and an oar dance is performed at the spring and autumn festivals.
* The path around the island is now partially closed due to rockfalls. You can also enjoy views of the coast from a boat tour.
