Discover the history and ecology of the island on foot Shrine and temple tour (Gogoshima Island)
From Matsuyama City Station
Gogoshima Island is about ten to fifiteen minutes from Takahama port in Matsuyama.
Take the Iyotetsu Takahama Line from Matsuyama City Station to Takahama Station (21 minutes). Takahama port is right in front of Takahama Station.
You can get to Gogoshima Island by ferry in about fifteen minutes. There are two ferries to Gogoshima Island that go to Tomari and Yura port. In this case, go to Yura port. This route starts from Yura port.

Take an early ferry and enjoy the morning air of the island
Enjoy stopping to admire the views, talking to the local people and cycling on this laid-back island. It’s suitable for cycling the east coast of the island from Tomari, through Funakoshi, Yura, and Umaiso.Yura port has 4 adult’s bicycles, 2 children’s bicycles and 2 tandems, and Tomari port has 4 adult’s bicycles. Ask the crew on the ferry to Tomari port and Yura port. They will help you with the application procedure. When using the bicycles at Yura port, you can complete the procedures at the port office, but since nobody is there on Saturday and Sunday, it’s best to do it on the ferry.
* You can return bicycles at either port. Gogoshima Island has two temples and shrines in each district. They each have interesting locations and origins and make an interesting tour on foot or by bicycle.

Nakagoze Shrine
The guardian of Yura and Kitaura
At this commanding-looking shrine, Tagoihime, Ichikishimahime and Tagitsuhime are enshrined and it was recorded in the “Wakeshi” of 1622. The grounds contain a shrine received from Sumiyoshi Shrine in Osaka. There is also a shrine to the Northern and Southern Dynasties military commander Nitta Yoshisada and a small shrine, Chineki Shrine, to the east of the inner sanctuary.
The stone steps lined with stone lanterns is impressive, and at the top you’re greeted by expressive guardian dogs. People used to pray at Sumiyoshi Shrine for safety at sea when the Yura district had a vibrant shipping industry, while Chineki Shrine protects the district from disease and disasters.

Turn left out of Yura port and go past Yura A Coop. Go down the road that splits off from prefectural road 195. Turn left at the beauty salon, turn left at the former Yura elementary school and it’s on the right.

Kannonji Temple
The Goddess of Mercy is waiting for you
After returning to Yura port, you next go right down the coast road in front of Yura port. Kannonji Temple is the first of the Gogoshima 88 temple pilgrimage sites, and it’s the family temple of the district. Climb the stairs where a white statue of Kannon stands, and you come to a wide area with another statue. It’s said that in the Nara Period, Gyogi established the temple when he stopped by Gogoshima Island.
This temple can be said to be the face of 250-year old Gogoshima pilgrimage, which is performed by many people every April 20 and 21.

Benzaiten Shrine
Waves lap at the white sandy beach of Benten
Follow the path out into the sea and you come to a white torii gate and a small shrine. It looks like a jewel in the clear blue sea. You’re likely to miss it if you go by bicycle. It’s a very typical island shrine.
On the festival day every January 7, it’s crowded with local people and their children. The shrine is maintained in good shape by the locals.

Turn right out of Yura port and you can soon see it on the right.

Taishogun Shrine
Blue sea seen from the hills and tiled roofs
After passing through a couple of torii gates and up flights of stone steps, you come to a place overlooking the Kadota district. It’s said that when Empress Jingu came back from her campaign in Korea, she rested with her warships anchored all over Yura Bay. The awed villagers built a shrine as protection for the village. The wooden shrine on the mossy ground is beautiful.
The shrine was built in 1823 and the carved wooden dragon quietly guards the shrine.

Head right out of Yura port. Turn left at the road before the Kadota Meeting Hall (in front of temple No. 84). Walk up between the houses and turn right when you hit the road. Follow the road up the hill.

Hamanomiya Shrine
A big camphor tree greets you
Toyotama Hikonomikoto is enshrined at this coastal shrine in Kadota district. It’s recorded in the “Wakeshi” of 1622 that, at the request of local fishermen, the god of Watatsumi Shrine in Nagasaki was transferred here to provide safety at sea and a good catch.
The mandarin groves in front of the stone step, and the sea breeze blowing through the grounds has the true feeling of an island. There’s an arbor, drinking fountain and toilets in nearby Kadota Park where you can have a rest.

Iwagami Shrine
A shrine with an enormous rock
Locals call it “Iwagami-sama”. It’s a huge rock 34 metres round and 5 metres high. Resting in deep woods, it’s celebrated as the home of a female deity, Iwanagahime. Logging the forest that surrounds the shrine is forbidden, so it is entirely natural. It’s registered as a natural monument of Matsuyama.
The natural trees and the mossy trunks of fallen trees create a unique and mysterious scene. Bear in mind the local faith when you visit.

Head right out of Hamanomiya Shrine along the coast road, turn left down the road between the cow house and greenhouses, go up the slope and its on the left when you see a pond on your right
On this occasion we visited some shrines and temples near Yura port, but they can also be found in Tomari and other parts of the island and they can be visited more quickly by bicycle, including the ones described here. Visit each temple and shrine with an appreciation for the local faith and history.
Funakoshi Wakehime Shrine
This shrine is in almost the center of Gogoshima Island, about ten minutes by bicycle from both Yura and Tomari ports. It has the distinctive majestic character of the tutelary shrine of the whole island. The grounds and front shrine are beautiful, and there’s a stone inscribed by calligrapher Miwata Beizan.

Tenzaisho Shrine
A shrine on the seashore of Kitaura that resonates to the sound of waves. Head along the road that runs along the schoolyard to the right of the gate of the old Yura elementary school, and after going over the pass, you come to Kitaura fishing port. Head right and there it is. About 15 minutes from Yura port by bicycle and on foot on the hills.

Koshoji Temple
Thrusting into the cliffs of the mound on which Akezawa Castle was sited, this temple was built by the lord of the castle in 1569. Turn right out of the port and about 1 minute by bicycle.

Itsukushima Shrine
The tutelary shrine of Tomari, it’s said that the deity was brought by the lord of Akezawa Castle from Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima in 1580. The precincts have a calming atmosphere, and it’s tempting to pause a while on the bench. Turn right out of Tomari port and it’s right there on the left.
