A sake brewer established in 1872. The main building and the brick chimney were registered as tangible cultural properties at the national level in 2004 for their contribution to the historic scenery of the area. The 20 m tall chimney is characterized by its distinct capital-like decoration at the top of the structure.
Sasaki Shuzo is strictly adhering to the traditional way of manufacturing sake, using local spring water and rice grown within Ehime Prefecture. Also, for the long term storage of sake, we do not use a refrigerator, but store sake in the natural way. Our naturally stored "Yaegiku" can only be purchased at the brewery.

To find us, visitors should look for a red pointed polygonal roof by the "Roadside station Hirota". It is surrounded by nature, and visitors will lose track of time making pottery. First timers can receive easy to follow step by step instructions.
The clay used in the pottery is locally produced. You can choose to hand-form the clay into a freehand shape or use a potter's wheel, and color your work choosing from 15 colored paints before glazing. Nearby, in the middle of Hirota district where nature is plentiful, is a 100 m long slide using conveyor rollers. Families can spend a delightful time here.
"Visitors can pick up their work after about 1 month."

The natural looking building with wooden walls is an accommodation built with local lumber. It is used by travelers, and also serves other purposes such as residents' training camps and meetings. Other facilities available are Hirota residents' ground and gymnasium (appointment necessary). The restaurant "Hirota no mori" (seating for 45 indoors, 17 terrace seats) serves authentic Italian dishes, as well as barbecue food. It is a wonderful site for viewing cherry blossoms in spring, fireflies in summer, and foliage in autumn.
The 1st floor restaurant "Hirota no mori" is in a natural setting, serving visitors Italian dishes. Our recommendation is pasta with tomato sauce made from local farmer's fresh tomatoes, herbs, pepper and salt. This dish is free of MSG. Other dishes such as hamburger, steak and pizza are also home-made, for health purposes.
"We are proud to say that everything served in this restaurant is home-made."

Gongensan mountain (elevation 440 m), which has three peaks, is the headwater of Nakanogawa. It is also called "mini-Ishizuchi", "Hirota Ishizuchi" or "West Ishizuchi of Iyo". The rest house at the foot of the mountain is packed each summer with people coming to seek the cooler atmosphere.
There is nothing like nagashi somen noodles dipped in the home-made noodle soup made with the clear water of Hirota in Tobe-cho, soybeans, and shiitake mushrooms. Highly recommended on a hot summer day, as the rest house is easily accessible from Prefectural Road 306.

A country diner located in the "Roadside station Hirota". We have "Tarai udon*" and "Sansai udon" made with fresh local mountain vegetables. We also have "Jinenjo (Japanese yam) soba" from November until the beginning of April. Standard menu items such as curry and rice, oden and coffee are also available.
* Udon noodles boiled in a big pot are transfered into a shallow wooden tub to be eaten dipped in a small cup of sauce.
To find us, look for a log house with a pointed roof. In the diner, our wooden tables and chairs will greet you warmly, where you can have simple country cooking while listening to the stream or the beautiful calls of Kajika frogs* in summer on the terrace section.
* Kajika frogs have been around since ancient times in Japan. Their high toned calls sound similar to deer calls, thus, it is said to be named Kajika (river deer). Kajika's calls are beautiful and have been described in numerous waka poems.

Tobe Tsukiage Fault Park
The main feature of this park is a reverse fault where older, lower layers of rock have been pushed up and over newer, higher layers on the median tectonic line that cuts across Japan. Known as the Tobe-Shojo Fault, the rock has been exposed through erosion from the Tobe River. It was designated a natural monument in 1938.
Senba Gorge
Along the gorge is a nature trail that provides an easy stroll for visitors. Visitors can see four seasons; mountain camellia in spring, an otherworldly show of fireflies in summer, and hear the beautiful courting songs of Kajika frogs* from within the gorge in August. They will also see foliage in autumn, and snow-covered scenery in winter.
*Kajika frogs have been around since ancient times in Japan. Their high toned calls sound similar to deer calls, thus, it is said to be named Kajika (river deer). Kajika's calls are beautiful and have been described in numerous waka poems.
