Dogo Onsen is one of the oldest hot springs in Japan with a 3,000-year history. The three-storied main building was built in 1894 and was designated as an important cultural property of Japan in 1994, when it celebrated its 100th anniversary. Dogo Onsen is also famous for appearing in Natsume Soseki's novel "Botchan". The simple alkaline hot string is relatively hot at about 43℃ and is said to have medical benefits against neuralgia, rheumatism, gastrointestinal disorders, anemia, etc.
There are two large-sized baths called Kaminoyu and Tamanoyu; and bathing tickets with tea, snack and yukata rental services are popular among tourists. Yushinden is an elegant bath exclusive to the Japanese Imperial Family and is the only one of its kind in Japan (allowed to take a look). Three times a day, the big time-telling drum at the Shinrokaku Tower is beaten. The drum beat has been chosen as one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan.
